What to expect from sleep psychology sessions?

What to expect

Psychology sessions are about 50 minutes in duration. Your first session will begin with discussing the more administrative aspects of seeing a psychologist, such as confidentiality, appointment cancellation policy, note-taking, and the number of sessions required. Then, it will be time to get to know you and the sleep difficulties you have been dealing with in more detail. This will help your psychologist develop a collaborative treatment plan with you, as psychological therapy for sleep difficulties can take different forms, depending on your needs/preferences and the training and experience of the psychologist.

For example, some people prefer a more directive and practical approach, with clear guidance and evidence-based strategies for improving sleep, such asĀ Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia. Others will be interested in learningĀ Mindfulness Based Meditation. Alternatively, some people will prefer to work more interpersonally in psychology sessions, focusing on understanding themselves and how aspects of their personality, work, relationships, personal circumstances, and current stresses play a role in their sleep difficulties. Often, a combined approach will be used. Your psychologist will discuss their thoughts on your treatment plan to help you get the most out of your psychology sessions to improve your sleep, wellbeing, and daytime functioning.

What are some common tools used in sleep psychology?

Common tools used in sleep psychology include:

Sleep diary: This tool helps you and your psychologist understand your sleep patterns, sleep difficulties and track treatment progress.

Thought records: These help you notice your thoughts about sleep and fatigue and reduce worry about sleeping problems.

Meditation and relaxation recordings: Recordings of mediation and relaxation exercises for you to practice at home.

Biofeedback: This tool measures heart rate variability to see how breathing and meditation exercises can help regulate your stress response.

What are the limits to confidentiality?

All personal information gathered during the psychological services will remain confidential and secure. There are some circumstances where psychologists are legally required to break confidentiality. These will be discussed with you in session. Please note that if you are seeing a psychologist under a Mental Health Care Plan, a brief report is required to be sent to the referring doctor at certain points throughout treatment.

How many sessions will I need?

The therapeutic approach and length of treatment will depend on your goals and specific sleep difficulties. Sometimes you will be able to see good results after several sessions, and other times, you will require longer-term therapy, which will be discussed with you in session. As a guide, most people will need between 3-10 sessions when working specifically on improving sleep. The maximum number of sessions covered by Medicare in one calendar year is 20.

Do I need a Mental Health Care Plan to see a psychologist?

You do not need a Mental Health Treatment Plan. However, if you have one from your doctor, you will be entitled to a Medicare rebate.

Can I get a private health rebate?

You will need to check with your private health fund if you are eligible for psychological services. Hailey is registered with most private health funds.
